Spring will return (I promise!)

Season Two of the Podcast started off with a powerful episode all about Sacred Cycles. My sister, Kendra, joined me to talk through just some of the cycles we have in our lives and how we can honor and flow with those hallowed rhythms.

What does that have to do with my plans tomorrow? Well, in the Celtic Wheel of the Year tomorrow marks Imbolc, the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Imbolc is all about the celebration of new beginnings, light, creation and inspiration (it's also a celebration of the the Celtic triple-goddess, Brigid, who is such a badass that the Catholic Church totally stole her and made her into the patron Saint of Ireland).

Why is this particular pagan holiday so potent that I lead off my February newsletter talking about it? Because, where I live in New Hampshire this time of year is deep winter. While I have grown to have a bit of a love affair with this time of year, it IS cold and dark... and it can be rather easy to forget that spring will in-fact come back to us.

I love Imbolc, because it's a reminder that even though things might feel dark and cold right now, light and life will return (as they always have). Trees and animals (and even people) might look like they're in a frozen state, but really we're all preparing for the growth and transformation that's right around the corner.

So tomorrow, I'll be buying myself a bouquet of flowers, planting the first of the seeds for my garden, lighting an candle (and maybe even doing a little spring cleaning here or there (...I mean, we'll see)).

I have found honoring the Sacred Cycles in my life (from my menstrual cycle, to the seasonal cycles, and beyond) leads me to deeper connection with nature and with myself. The Celtic Wheel probably resonates with me because so much of DNA is of Celtic/Nordic heritage (Really, really. I'll show you my 23-and-me results). But, I hope you take this as an invitation to look into perhaps a traditional calendar that resonates with you (whether it's the Chinese, Hindu, Jewish, or any other you feel drawn to).

This is the last thought I'll leave you with on the eve of Imbolc. Not much has been light about headlines regarding global and national events since the start of this year. But Imbolc reminds us to have faith that spring will come and the light will return.
